WOW! I think I will be saying that a lot this trip. The changes in landscape as we made our way into New Mexico were incredible. Started out flat as a pancake...nothing but scrub dessert with mesas as far as the eye could see..then we started climbing into the Carson National Forest mountains. Snow capped Santa Fe Baldy (ski area) 12,600 ft! off in the distance as we made our way into Taos. Now we are at the valley base of the San Juan Mountain range. Taos is adobe and stone, and much greener than we thought. 90 degrees and dry. Elevation some where around 9000ft....the highest I have ever been! The air is clean and fresh and smells something like a mixture of eucalyptus and bay leaves! Heavenly. We had lunch at a New Mexican restaurant..pretty good. Heat in the sauce but flavors a little duller than we like. Spent and hour in the public park, sitting in the shade while we waited for our room to be ready. Took a dip in the pool...and resting now...later off to The Plaza in Taos proper for shopping and dinner. Headed to Durango in the morning, having lunch there and then setting up camp at Mesa Verde for two days of camping and Hiking...will be off the grid until we get to Ouray, Will post our camping pics then!
