DAY ONE- JUNE 20, 2015

We left at midnight Friday!  Arrived in Vega TX at 8:25 pm! Traveled 1300 miles  - Total gas cost $81.00  What a deal!
I slept most of the way through until Nasheville TN.  In truth, the scenery from home to Little Rock Arkansas was a lot like home...nonetheless...beautiful!

When we reached Oklahoma and the panhandle of TX, I felt like I was entering another world...and at times, felt like I was on another planet. I have never traveled this part of the country. The Heartland, as they call it.  Rolling hills, but relatively flat. First, with rolling hills, trees and fields of various crops and grass. Then, flatter....flatter, trees shorter and shorter....and then almost no trees at all. Most interesting of all...and what made it feel alien...Windmills. Everywhere. They are truly surreal. Huge and so unnatural against the landscape...and yet so "natural" because they provide clean energy. Huge contrasts though...as we passed frack well after frack well and even a CAFO farm..right next to the road...where we could see the poor cows crowded together, pushing each other to get to the feed bins. and the smell. UGH.  The flatness of the landscape at times felt like you are looking out across the ocean...and in a way..we were.  This land was an inland sea...so long ago.  We are exhausted.  Proud that we made it so far. Safe. But very tired. Glad that we went so far today. Now we can enjoy what we came to see! New Mexico and Colorado. Off to Taos in the morning, once we rest.

  2. 1300 miles..WOW!!! Makes our 350 seem like a trip to the corner store. We stayed in St George, SC last night. On to Wytheville, VA for tonight.
Hope you enjoy Taos...Mom is envious.
